My Best Reads of 2017

Happy New Year peeps.

I decided to take a much needed break from blogging for the majority of 2017 due to several life changing factors but I decided to come back for 2018 and write about all things that interest me and hopefully my readers.

Speaking of interests, I read a lot this year. More than I hoped for. I normally participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge each year and last year was no different. I established that I would read fifteen books but I genuinely didnt think I would touch this as I was so busy in the first half of the year with my final year of uni and then we bought a house in the second half so I knew I wouldnt have time but I completed it and decided I would share my absolute favourite reads of 2017.

Hi guys,

I thought I would just have another chatty post today. I’ve been doing a lot of that recently apart from the CB12 review and the reason behind it was the fact I was getting a little bored of writing the same kind of posts. Don’t get me wrong, I adore writing beauty content but I feel like I have lost my mojo a bit and I am taking a little break from it. I’m not saying I have stopped but I just want to get some of my thoughts down and things that I enjoy as this blog is supposed to be about me and my opinions but also about me as a person so my lovely readers get a feel for who I am and what I am about. So... I am going to talk about my favourite season EVER! Autumn. The official day for autumn to begin is something like the 22nd September but as far as I am concerned it starts as of today, the 1st September. 

Now you will notice there is no pumpkin spiced lattes or Ugg boots in this post ladies and gentlemen! I’m not criticising but I’m not too fussed about those things really. Everything else however, is what I’m looking forward to most.

1. Weather

Ok, I’m not one to moan about it being too hot, especially when the sun is shining but man oh man, it’s just been too humid recently. I live in Glasgow and we pretty much get about 11 months of rain/wind but the other month is normally made up of a few sunny days, maybe a few weeks if we are lucky and then just some unbearably humid days with no sunshine whatsoever. What the fuck is that all about? Give me sunshine or don’t but don’t make me sweat with no chance of a BBQ or tan in return! Give me a break mate.

2. Clothes

Nothing screams autumn to me more than plenty of loose layers, chunky knitwear and some cute boots. I love the colours of the season too when it comes to clothes as they are all so inviting and comfy looking. 

3. All the Holidays

Let’s face it, the best holidays ever take place in autumn, apart from Christmas of course. But my favourite has to be Halloween. I love everything about it, especially if there is a party going on. I love Halloween sweets, candied apples, dressing up, having a night to get drunk with all my besties and then chilling out with some awesome horror movies. 

4. Movies

I love all the movies at this time of year. They are some of the best, especially when there is a good old fashioned horror going on at the cinema but I love the classics such as Hocus Pocus, Chucky and Beetlejuice. They just scream autumn to me.

5. Return of TV

As far as I am concerned, the TV situation is seriously lacking during the summer months. I understand why but when you live in Glasgow, there aren’t many opportunities to go out and enjoy the sun so you end up staying in more often than not hence the reason I am excited for some fall TV. The ones I am most excited about are Great British Bake Off, Great British Menu, The Fall (Jamie Dornan anyone?!), Cold Feet, Gilmore Girls (YASSSSSSS), Black Mirror, Westworld, How to get away with Murder, Transparent, Our Girl, Divorce, Criminal Minds and SVU. I have just finished season one and two of The Affair but I don’t think that will be back until the winter. Another great show that I watched online was The Night Of. I think it might have started already or may be starting soon but I highly recommend it.

6. Food

Who doesn’t love a huge hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows? I mean it is a staple when it comes to the colder months. Usually people will say this is a winter drink but for me it all starts in autumn. It doesn’t just end with HC, I touched upon this in the holiday section of the post but for me I love everything Halloween based with some great meat, vegetables and fruits thrown in for good measure. I am happy with a good stew, a glass of red wine and then a banging dessert, usually something apple based.

7. Colours

There is something about the colours of autumn that gives me great comfort. I just love the red, orange, yellow and green hues flowing through each and every street but it’s the parks where it’s really at. I love going for wee walks in the autumn months as the whole place is truly magical.

8. Homeware

Now this is probably my most favourite of the lot. I absolutely love going into the supermarkets and stores round about me and seeing all their gorgeous autumnal products on display. Again, it’s mostly the colours that capture me but it’s the designs on mugs, bedding, cushions, etc. that really gets me excited. Next Home has got to be one of my favourite places on earth and it does not let me down when autumn hits. It’s also a favourite due to the fact that Costa lives upstairs and I can grab a Chai Latte and some cake before walking about the store.

9. Dark Lips

I love a deep dark lip when the colder months come in, it’s just the perfect time to make those bad boys stand out. Anything that is red, purple or deep pink is where it’s at for me when it comes to makeup. I especially love Nars Liv, Mac Rebel and Rimmel #107 as they are the perfect shades for autumn.

10. Baths and Comfy Pjs

Come on now! How could I write this post and not talk about my two favourite things in the world. When the colder months come in, I am all about baths and comfy warm pyjamas. I absolutely adore it and I always buy a few new pairs of pyjamas every year. Lush and Pretty Suds are probably my favourite websites to buy from when it comes to bath products as they have a wide range and always have some great smelling autumn delights. Throw in a good book and a large glass of red wine and I am one happy lassie.

So there we have it, my top highlights of autumn. Seriously, how many times can I say autumn in this post ha-ha. Autumn, autumn, autumn.

My Summer Reads #2

Hi guys, 

As you know, and I’m sorry if I am going on about it ha-ha, but I came back from Corfu recently and you may also know that I am a keen reader so I wanted to share with you the books I read while I was there. I predicted what books I would read which you can find here but as per usual I geared away from it, only a little though. I am not a romantic novel kind of a girl, I stay within the crime/thriller/drama/autobiography section as I just enjoy these so much more than Katie fell in love with Stevie and they lived happily ever after kind of a book. I`m not slagging off anyone who reads these type of books but they aren’t for me unless it has something else going on. I also thought I would add in some more pictures of my holiday here too but if you would like to read my Life Update post, there are more over there too.

The first book I read was Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. I am a huge GF fan and was keen to get right into this book as I had heard a lot of good things about it. Camille is the main character who is a journalist in Chicago. She is asked to go back home and get the scoop on two girls who have gone missing and are found dead. I gave this 3 stars on goodreads as I found it very predictable. After a few chapters, it was quite clear to see where the story was going which is something I hate when reading. I don’t like to know what’s going on a quarter of the way through. None of the characters were very likeable, the only one I thought was ok was Camille as it was horrible to see how her relationship with her mother was and the reasons behind it.

The second book I read was Still Missing by Chevy Stevens. Chevy is becoming a firm favourite of mine now, I love her style of writing and the overall story she tells and this was no different. This is based around a girl called Annie who is kidnapped at her work and kept prisoner for almost a year. Reading what happened to her over the course of this period was harrowing but once she was found, it was equally as bad. I gave this 5 stars on goodreads as I could not put it down. I was hooked from the beginning.

I then moved onto an autobiography as I wanted to read something lighter and that came in the form of Rylan Clark Neal’s book. I gave this 3 stars as it was a bit bleugh. I absolutely adore Rylan and was looking forward to reading this, I mean, I didn’t hate it, but I expected more to be honest. I do love the fact that he wrote it himself and that really came across as I felt like he was reading it to me. I loved hearing about his upbringing and how he overcame certain obstacles but nothing substantial actually happened to him. I think I just expected it to delve a little bit further than it did but it didn’t.

After having a break from the normal crime/thriller books I delved straight back in with Those Girlsby Chevy Stevens. Like I said, she is becoming a firm favourite now and this book really hit the ground running from the first page. This is based on the lives of three sisters Dani, Courtney and Jess who have a pretty hard life. Their mother died when they were young and their dad is a violent drunk who works offshore. Something happens and they end up going on the run but what happens from that point is truly horrific. I really felt for the girls and willed them to have a better life after the events that took place. This starts off telling it from the youngest sister, Jess`s, point of view which happens in 1997. It then moves onto one of their daughter’s point of view 18 years later. The first part was amazing to read but the second part was a little slow in getting into the story, once it did, I was blown away! Well worth a read. Gave this 4 stars.

I then decided to crack on with the Crucifix Killer by Chris Carter. I gave this 5 stars as it was a wild adventure I was taken on. This is the first book in the Robert Hunter series and I have to say, I will 100% be buying every other one as this one was such a good read. It reminded me of a great 90s thriller like The Bone Collector but with so much more. It is very graphic though, I wasn’t expecting that to be honest and I often winced at some of the descriptions given when it came to bodies being found in a certain way. This is well written and weaves in other stories so carefully so there is a lot going on. I figured out who the killer was about 3/4 of the way through but couldn’t for the life of me figure out why so when it was finally revealed, I really felt for them. Obviously, they are a sadistic serial killer so I wasn’t that sorry for them but it was such a great book. Highly recommend if you love a good thriller.

So, I got through five books in Corfu, I honestly thought it would be more but once I was outside and perched up on the private decking I found myself just staring at the water. Give me a vodka, a bit of 90s music and the sea and I am happy!

Life Update

Hi guys, 

I thought I would just check in with you all and give you a little run down. Its not going to be super exciting cause I am one boring bastard but I thought I would do it anyway ha-ha. I love Life Update posts, they are some of my favourites to read so here is mine.

Firstly, I just got back from Corfu on Saturday. I’m going to go in with this one guys. I’m sorry. On the first night, I was a silly cow wasnt I and fell down a flight of stairs! Sober as well! WHATS THAT ALL ABOUT? I only went and damaged the ligaments in my ankle so you can imagine how painful it was to even put pressure on never mind walk on it. I was pure looking forward to walking for miles each day, having fun in the sea with Liam and checking out some of the sights we left out last year but we had to stay on the private decking area within our apartment which did become somewhat boring. Im not whining, I know some people dont get to holiday every year and I am very lucky to have gone away, but when you have been an idiot & ruined your holiday from the very first day, your gonna have a bit of a moan arent you? Don’t get me wrong, looking out to the sea was beautiful and because it was private it was quiet plus it had stairs going straight into the sea but you want to get out n about on holiday don’t you? I was raging with myself for not looking where I was going that night, so the first few days I was a right moody bitch and ended up snapping a few times at Liam but bless him, he just let me rant and rave before filling up my wine glass more and more ha-ha. I’ve got a keeper ladies!

The complex itself was stunning. We stayed in the Galini Apartments in Messonghi, Corfu which was right on the beach with the sea right at your doorstep. The weather was intense, it never fell below 30 degrees so of course I had to drink as much alcohol as my body would allow to keep me hydrated ha-ha. Also this helped alleviate the pain. I would hang my head in shame at the amount of alcohol consumed, but I’m not ashamed ha-ha. I enjoyed every minute of it. I did also drink a lot of water but let’s not kid around, I was more interested in the wine and vodka!

We met up with Liam's mum and her partner, while we were there which was lovely so we had a nosey around the gorgeous streets and had a lovely wee lunch in Corfu Town. Since I stayed at the complex most days, I read a few books, not as many as I wanted right enough. Once I was propped up on a sun lounger with an endless supply of vodka & wine I found myself just looking out to the sea for a couple of hours. It was so beautiful. Along with the vodka and Britney's greatest hits blasting in my ears, I have to say, it really calmed me down.  I will do a breakdown of what books I read while I was away on another blogpost.

Moving on, as you know, I joined Slimming World at the start of July and have been so pleased with the results. In my first four weeks I lost 7lbs which may not sound like a lot but I had a lot going on throughout July. I had my sisters birthday meal, my birthday meal, my aunties 50th birthday meal, my other aunties 60th drinking marathon and my mums birthday meal so I am surprised I lost anything to be honest. Its nice though, even though its only 7lbs, I can already feel the loss in my clothes and see it in my face which is excellent. SW has been amazing, really cant fault it at all. I have well and truly found my feet when it comes to the eating plan as it’s very generous and I don’t feel like I am losing out on anything. If I want an ice cream, chocolate bar or packet of crisps, then I have them and add them to my syn count for that day which never goes over 15. Obviously I will have put on due to my holiday but I can easily get back into it. UPDATE: I lost 1/2 lb which I am over the moon with considering I drank pretty much every day and had a lot of coffees & pastries as well as chips ha-ha. 

As for fitness, I bought a Fitbit Flex (£79.99) before I went on holiday as I wanted something to count my steps throughout the day and this had the best reviews. I am in awe at this little guy as it goes on like a watch and counts each step taken. It also connects to your phone via Bluetooth, keeps track of food & drinks as well as tracking your sleeping pattern. I would highly recommend you get one of these as it’s amazing to see how many steps you can take during the day.

Arggghhh. The dreaded Uni! I start back on 8th September and I am so nervous guys. It’s not really a good nervous either. I'm just not looking forward to it and have been toying with the idea of just looking for a job and sacking off my honours year but I may be acting a little hasty there. I think it’s because I have built it up in my head over the course of 3rd year and the fact that I have to attend a new campus. But I don’t know. The only thing keeping me going is the fact that some of my favourite people will be coming with me apart from my favourite one! If you’re reading this Heather, I am devastated you won’t be there!! It’s all good though cause I know for a fine fact she will always be up for a liquid lunch which will turn into a night out. I can’t believe it’s been three years since I decided to leave my job and take the plunge with education as the time has flew by. I am so glad I done it though as I love the course and have been lucky when it came to the friends I have met. It’s kinda sad that it will all be over soon and I will need to find a full time job, but I am equally going to be glad that I don’t have to look at another exam again or write a report on something that seems ridiculous to me. Wish me luck!

As far as my little job went, it kinda didn’t if I’m honest. From the interview I never should have accepted the role. They said some things that had alarm bells going off with regards to time off for exams, holidays and the fact they didn’t want me to become accredited with an accounting association but I took it regardless and hated it from the minute I stepped into the office. I cried every day I came home from work, and I mean full on sobbing as it wasn't what I was used to at all. Poor Liam had to console me every time he saw me and constantly told me to quit if it made me that upset but I am not a quitter, especially when it comes to my work but it was too much and I ended up leaving after 6 months. Even the days leading up to me working were filled with anxiety which is not something I suffer from usually but when my Uni work started to suffer, I knew it was time to go. Even my lecturers noticed a difference in my work and attitude as it really got me down with one actually taking me aside and asking if I had broken up with Liam ha-ha because I looked terrible (Cheers Fiona!) I am not going to butcher this small firm at all, especially not online or on this blog, but I am glad I am away from it all to be honest as it wasn't my cup of tea which was such a shame.

Family wise, my gorgeous little niece, who is really my cousin by the way but she is 26 years younger than me and I refuse to call her my cousin. It all gets a bit weird when I say she is my uncles daughter which could also mean he is my brother but we aint hillbillies (no offence), we do not condone those type of relationships in my family! Anyway, that was some tangent to go off on, but I wanted to clear it up. She started school this year and I missed it *crying emoji* I cannot believe my little baby is going to be five years old in October and has started school! Where has the time gone? I feel as though she was just a chubby wee baby five minutes ago and now she is giving me makeup tips due to her love of YouTube ha-ha. Seriously, she sits at my makeup table pumping the foundation onto the back of her hand and tries to apply with my RT miracle sponge. SHE IS TOO CUTE!  I missed her first day at "college" as she calls it but I was sent some very cute pictures of her in her uniform and the cuteness oozing from her was unbearable! I actually can’t get over her sometimes, she is adorable and the light of my life. 

Lastly, I still haven't found a house for me and Liam to buy, I’m still not engaged and I’m still not preggers but do you know what, I’m enjoying life just the way it is and hopefully those things come with time. He better hurry up though as it’s been 8 years and I’m only getting older ha-ha. 

Anyway, I’ve got my first weigh in tonight with SW (shitting myself) but after that, I will be buying a nice bottle of red, have a relaxing bath and chilling out with a book tonight. I don’t know which one right enough so I will have a wee look and see what tickles my fancy but I hope all is going well with you guys. Holiday Reads

Hi guys,

As you know, I am an avid reader and last year really took the biscuit when it came to the number of books I read of holiday. You can find that post here where I discussed what I read while I was in Corfu but the total number was ten. I couldn't quite believe it but when you don’t have a TV and your lying by a pool all day, there isn't much else you can do other than read and drink cocktails ha-ha. Obviously we went out, done excursions and seen some of the sites but that holiday was all about relaxing and that’s exactly what we done.

This year, we are going back to Corfu, different place though, and we plan to do pretty much the same thing. As we done most of the touristy things last year, we are going to relax by the sea and pretty much read all day. May sound boring to you but it sounds divine to me. As always I am taking my kindle, I got a new Paperwhite (£110) for my birthday and have already loaded it up with over 100 books. I also ordered books in their physical form, I don’t know, I’m still a little old school and love the feel and smell of a book so I take two or three in my hand luggage. Without further ado, here are the books which I want to read on holiday.

1. Rylan Clark - The Life of Rylan

I love Rylan. I know a lot of people gave him stick when he first popped on our screens in 2012 but I’ve always loved his attitude and quick wit. He has taken the presenting world by storm, and rightly so. I feel as though he is on every channel now but fair play to him, he could have taken the endorsement route, and by that I mean putting his name to many shitty products, but he decided to work hard and build up his reputation. I am dying to read this as I love autobiography. I also like the fact he wrote it himself, no ghost writers like most people out there nowadays.

2. Chris Carter - The Crucifix Killer

Come on now, you all know by now that crime is my favourite genre. Chris Carter used to work as a criminal psychologist for several years, during which he interviewed and worked on over one hundred cases involving serial killers, murderers and serious offenders so you know he will be good at capturing how they think. This book is all about a sadistic serial who has been arrested for his crimes but two years later an another body is found which is very similar to his work. It may be a copycat or they police may have sent the wrong person to his execution. I have to say, this is right up my street.

3. Scott Westerfeld - Uglies

Something about this book really makes me wanna read it, so I’m doing it. It’s not a book I would normally reach for as it’s all about teenage angst, something I stay away from. I can’t stand the Twilight or Divergent type books as they are very predictable. Give me a break!

4. Emma Cline - The Girls

I am intrigued by cults so this book is right up my street. This is very like the infamous Charlie Manson and his girls who committed the horrific murder of Sharon Tate and six others. I have read a few pages but I am going to leave this for the plane I think.

5. Chevy Stevens - Those Girls

This book is all about three sisters who live with a mean tempered father. One night when a fight gets out of hand, they decide to run away from home and end up in an even worse nightmare when their truck breaks down. It then jumps eighteen years into the future where one of the sisters and a niece go missing. I love the sound of this. I think it will be very much like a chapter in the past and then a chapter in the future. I love these type of books. They are full of suspense and they build up to an excellent ending. I recently finished That Night by Chevy which was pretty much the same style of writing and it was great.

6. Gillian Flynn - Sharp Objects

I have read all of Gillian’s books and I have to say, she is slowly becoming one of my favourite authors. This one is all about two girls who go missing and reporter Camille is dragged into it. This is to be made into a TV show with Amy Adams in the lead so I want to read it before it airs on TV.

7. Tess Gerritsen - Girl Missing

I am one morbid soul aren’t I? I’ve just realised that most of these books are all about girls going missing but what can I say, I love the types of books! I’m not one for romantic beach novels, they just don’t float my boat. I don’t really care about Mandy pining over Steven for 17 years and then getting together with him at the end! No offence if you do, it’s just not for me. Anyway, this is all about another serial killer who kills young girls. No surprise there. I promise I am not a secret serial killer nor do I have any tendencies to kidnap anyone, I just really like crime, I did study Forensic Science remember.

These are the books I have either downloaded or bought and I am so excited to read them. I will give you an update on them when I return from holiday mid August. I will end up reading more or changing my mind after reading the first few chapters and hating the book but I shall let you know.

What I Read This Summer

What I Read This Summer

Hi Guys, 

As you know, I was on holiday for two weeks in Greece and I decided to put together a little list of some books I fancied reading. As with anything I do, I deterred a little from the list but I was very proud of the amount of books I actually got through. To find out what I had every intention of reading then click here. 

I will start off with the books that I wanted to read and actually read on holiday. These were as follows: 

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn: 

If anyone read Gone Girl then you will be familiar with Gillian’s method of telling a story from everyone`s point of view and this book is no different. This is quite dark as the name would suggest as it involves a brutal murder of three family members and tells their stories from the morning of the murder until the final act itself. It also tells the story from the murderer’s point of view and the only surviving daughters view in the present day. This was an absolute joy to read; it flowed easily and was finished in one day!   

Michael J Fox Autobiography: 

I loved this book in the beginning but then it got a little boring. I loved that his sense of humour shone from the pages but I did get a little bored with the political side of things to be honest.

Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin: 

I was going to read Something Blue too but after reading the first book I thought I would give it a swerve. This was very predictable and honestly not for me! I love crime, horror, biographies etc. but I really wanted to give this a go as I loved the film but it gets a big old thumbs down I’m afraid. 

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness:  

This book is 700+ pages long and I was contemplating throwing my kindle in the pool by 50% as it took so damn long to get to that point. I persevered and managed to get to 88% on holiday. This is one long ass book but it’s amazing! I have really enjoyed reading it but I will need to finish this when I get a minute or two due to university starting back and then I will then purchase the next two books in the series. Well worth a read for any Twilight fans out there except this is for grown-ups and not teenagers (nothing stopping teenagers reading it though as it’s not 18+).

Now onto the books I decided to read when I was on holiday. It’s amazing how many books you can get through with no TV, great weather and a few cocktails. I am a very fast reader so please don’t think I am bragging about reading so many books but once I am hooked it’s very hard for me to put it down. I did actually do other things on holiday including various excursions but whilst traveling to them I decided to get my kindle out and read as it helped the time go in quicker. These are the books I managed to finish:

Four Chelsea Handlers Books (yes, you read that correct, 4!) including: 

Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang, Are you There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea, My Horizontal Life and Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me. 

I’ve never been a fan of this Chelsea as I thought she was a little obnoxious but I wanted to read something different so I started off with her first book which was My Horizontal Life. This was laugh out loud funny so I carried onto the second which was Are You There Vodka, then Lies Chelsea Told Me and finished with Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang. I honestly thought I was going to throw my back out from laughing so much. If you are prudish or don’t particularly like vulgar language then I would suggest you give these a miss but I couldn’t put them down. I would go into fits of laughter whilst reading these as they were all hilarious. I got a few looks from my Liam and also some people who were travelling with us but I couldn't stop myself. Her dad is now my hero. Please read if you have a sense of humour! They are amazing.

The Accident by C.L Taylor:  

This was a well written piece of work. Finished in one day. Honestly couldn't put it down. This starts off in present day Brighton with the main characters daughter stepping out in front of a bus and then brings in diary entries from the main characters life from 15 years ago in London. It weaves in the diary entries perfectly and leaves you wanting more and more. Would highly recommend.

One Night in Winter by Simon Sebag Montefiore:  

This is not something I would have bought had I read the back of the book but the front cover sold it for me (judging books by covers eh?) This is based in 1945 Russia when Stalin was in power (not my cup of tea at all) and has everything in it including love, fear, conspiracy, adultery & murder. I was gripped from the first page as it brought history and fiction together to tell a story that was heart-breaking for so many characters. I couldn't believe it started off with a game being played by teenagers to them all being arrested for trying overturn the government. A firm favourite of mine now. 

The Boy That Never Was by Karen Perry:  

This was similar to Gone Girl and Dark Places as it told the story from the main characters point of view but it was so much more. It is based in Dublin and Tangiers and tells the heart-breaking story of a couple who are trying to hold it together after their child dies in an earthquake. There are a lot of twists and turns and by the end of the book, you could tell what the outcome was going to be but it was a superb read. 

This was everything I read on a two week holiday to Greece! Ten full books and very nearly an eleventh! Looking at the list it seems like so much but as I said, I am a very fast reader and these books were so hard to put down. My flight was also 5 1/2 hours each way so it was plenty of time to finish off a book. My top recommendations would be One Night in Winter (Top Pick), The Boy That Never Was, Dark Places and The Accident although I thoroughly enjoyed most of everything I read. I now only have nine books left to read to complete my reading challenge of 25 books for 2015 through Goodreads. Wish me luck.
