My Best Reads of 2017

Happy New Year peeps.

I decided to take a much needed break from blogging for the majority of 2017 due to several life changing factors but I decided to come back for 2018 and write about all things that interest me and hopefully my readers.

Speaking of interests, I read a lot this year. More than I hoped for. I normally participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge each year and last year was no different. I established that I would read fifteen books but I genuinely didnt think I would touch this as I was so busy in the first half of the year with my final year of uni and then we bought a house in the second half so I knew I wouldnt have time but I completed it and decided I would share my absolute favourite reads of 2017.

My Yearly Favourites

Happy New Year!!!! I hope your head doesn't hurt too much today ha-ha. 

I say it every year, but I cannot believe how quickly this year went and I also can't believe everything that happened in 2016. It felt like the year that every music legend was taken, there was numerous atrocities all over the world and there were some very important issues highlighted which will hopefully be the beginning of something very special. I also can't forget the UK voted to leave the EU, Donald Trump is the President of the USA with Nigel Farage being an unofficial spokesperson for Britain and Marmite almost caused a rammy in our local supermarkets! But lets leave all that behind, this post isn't meant to be heavy at all, I just couldn't believe the things that have happened and I wanted to reminisce. This post however, is all about beauty.

Hermes Fragrance | Un Jardin En Méditerranée

I should actually be studying but I sacked it off to do this little blog post instead ha-ha. We all need a break sometimes and this is my down time.

I have been wearing Hermes Un Jardin En Mediterranee (from £59) since I was 18 years old when a colleague of mine, Sam, introduced me to the brand. I think it launched in 2003 and was quite unknown here. Im pretty sure it was only House of Fraser who stocked it back then. Even now, it is quite hard to source online so I always purchase from HoF or John Lewis as I know they arent selling fakes and they are reasonably priced too. Obviously you could source it directly from Hermes, but I wasn’t about the online shopping back then, not a lot of people were to be honest so it was HoF or JL all the way.

As you can imagine, I earned nothing back then, I was only a hairdressing junior so I relied on samples and quick skooshes from Sam as she always had a bottle tucked away in her designer handbag. If truth be told, I think this is where my obsession with designer handbags and unusual scents came from as I looked up to Sam as she was such a good role model plus she was stunning and effortlessly chic. I am 31 now and I still wear this perfume. I always have a bottle and as soon as I know it’s about to run out, I order another one so I am never without.

I have yet to find a similar perfume, I don’t know if I’m not looking hard enough or if there really isn’t anything like this as it is quite unique. It is described as the spirit of a Mediterranean garden which is both sensual and enveloping. It contains aromas of Fig Woods and Leaves, Orange Blossom, Bergamot (my all-time fave scent) and White Oleander. As soon as I had a whiff of this beauty, I was hooked. It really does capture the senses. Liam's step sister commented on it by saying it was the most sexual fragrance she has ever smelled, so that gives you an idea of the scent. I wear this on special occasions or on date nights (it works wonders!) and I am never short of compliments. 

This is also a unisex fragrance so any guys out there who love this scent, can get away with it too. I personally think its a little too floral to be worn by men, but if you like it, wear the hell out of it!

After having a major Pinterest session the other day, I came across the lovely Rebecca from “From Roses” latest posts including one based on choosing one product from each beauty category. I really liked this idea, so much so, that I decided to carry it out too. I changed mine up a little by only choosing drugstore products and adding more categories. I am going to choose products based on everything I do after cleansing and moisturising so I don’t leave anything out. Primer

There's only one primer for me and that’s the Nivea Post Shave Balm for Sensitive Skin (£5.35), I use this all the time. Every time I apply my makeup, regardless of where I am going, this is the first step for me. I have a full review of this bad boy right here.

Foundation

This is the easiest one to choose, of course it’s going to be Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation (£9.99). I have raved about this ever since I first purchased it and years later it is still a staple in my foundation drawer. I love the consistency of it (think Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua but way cheaper), how easy it glides onto the skin, the subtle glow it gives and its impeccable staying power. An absolute must have! 

Concealer

This was a little tougher I have to admit. I like so many drugstore concealers but after thinking long and hard, I decided on Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (£4.19) as it’s amazing. The consistency is magical, it blends out beautifully and covers a multitude of sins. I use this to cover dark circles, to cover blemishes, redness around my nostrils and also to highlight down the centre of my face. It is an absolute dream.

Face Powder

It has to be Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder (£3.99) doesn’t it! Not much to say about this other than it helps keep my makeup on all day.

Contour

I have tried an obscene amount of contouring products in the past but when I am in a rush and just want something to add a bit of colour then I find myself reaching for the Tanya Burr Peachy Glow Palette (£8). This is perfect for my fair skin and as it’s a compact it also includes a highlighter and blush.

Blusher

Even though the TB contour palette has a blusher, I always reach for the multi toned Max Factor Crème Puff Blush (£8.99). I really struggled to pick just one shade so I am picking all 6 of them as they are just dreamy. This is easy to blend and you only need the tiniest amount on your brush to create a gorgeous shade on your skin. 

Highlighter

Has to be Makeup Revolution Pro Illuminate (£4). It’s the only drugstore highlighter I have used and had to take a step back once the glow was applied! Seriously impressive.

Mascara

Erm, there is only one mascara out there for me and it is the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara (£7.99). I was always a Falsies (£8) kind of a girl until this beauty was released. I honestly cant big it up anymore, it creates the most gorgeous lashes by coating each and every lash, even the small corner ones. It helps to blend your lashes into false ones without being over the top. It has the blackest of black shades, beautiful formula and better yet, it doesn’t bloody transfer onto my eyelids or bottom lash line throughout the day. I have a full review right here. 

Eyeliner

This is a little frustrating as my all-time favourite is the NYC Liquid Eyeliner but I can’t seem to find it anymore so I have to settle on the NYX Vinyl Liquid Liner (£5.50) which is my second favourite. The NYX liner is a dream come true, it has a thin tip which helps to glide over the eye to create a beautiful line and it is easy to create a little flick or a full blown wing. I’m not saying it will be perfect every time as that depends on the person but this is really good. It is super dark, one of the blackest liners I have ever used and I don’t have any issues with it moving throughout the day. 

Eyebrows

Soap and Glory Archery (£10) is the best I have tried from a drugstore. I have tried a million different compacts, gels, pencils, powders and this is still the one I would go to as it has a little pencil for precision and then a felt tip point to create texture. 

Lipstick

This is a little tougher as there are so many good lip products out there, especially from the drugstore. If I had to choose just one I would pick the Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms (£7.99) as I find them to be moisturising, pigmented and have a great selection of shades. 

Setting Spray

It has to be L'Oréal Paris Infallible Fixing Mist (£7.99), this is a little cloudy concoction that helps keep your makeup stay on all day. If there was only one setting spray in the world and this was it, I would be happy. 

So there we have it, if I could only choose one product from each section, then it would be these guys. I actually buy these over and over again as they are some of the best products on the market, well for me anyway. I love the finish I get after applying my full face and I have to say, I am never disappointed with how my makeup settles as the day goes on.

Jeffree Star | Mannequin & Rose Matter

Unicorn Blood, Mannequin, Rose Matters and Celebrity Skin

Hi guys,

I picked up a few more vegan friendly Jeffree Star Liquid Lipsticks ($18) a while ago when there were new releases and also a restock of some extremely popular shades. I bought Rose Matter and Mannequin as they were the new shades but I didn’t bother with any other ones as I already had them in my collection.

I know there has been a lot of heat on Twitter when it comes to Jeffree Star, and I thought long and hard about putting this post up but I came to the conclusion that I love these products and felt the need to share my views. 

As I said on my previous post, these are the best liquid lipsticks I have ever used as they don’t dry out my lips too badly compared to other brands, they are the most pigmented products I have ever used and the staying power is just incredible. I would wholeheartedly recommend everyone try them out at some point, especially if you are a liquid lipstick lover who likes a full on matte finish. How I wear them is by scrubbing my lips with a sugar scrub such as this or a homemade one, apply lip butter like this, line my lips with a similar colour and then apply this. It stays put pretty much all day and I have no problems with bleeding or smudging. If I leave the lip butter on, the lipstick doesn't last as long though so be wary of that if you try this technique.

Rose Matter is a soft neutral coral which is perfect for spring/summer season. I can’t say I 100% love this shade as I am not a big coral fan but if you are then you will love this. Like Unicorn Blood and Celebrity Skin, it is very watery and goes on opaque. One swipe from the doe foot applicator is plenty as it is super pigmented. It dries completely and lasts really well until you have something oily and then it starts to come off. This is a known fact about all of the lipsticks in Jeffree’s line, it’s something we have to deal with I’m afraid.

Mannequin is a cool toned nude which is darker than the shade I’m Nude but lighter than Celebrity Skin so if you didn’t like the look of those, this should be right up your street. I love this shade, sometimes Celebrity Skin feels a little darker and grungy and even though I am all about grungy lips sometimes I want to go for a softer lip especially if I go for a full on smokey eye.

This was the first time I purchased straight from Jeffree’s website as I bought from Beautylish previously. I wont be buying direct again as I was hit with a £12.92 custom charge from Royal Mail which seemed extreme for lipsticks that cost a few pounds more. I will also be keeping a close eye on Cocktail Cosmetics as they are the official company in the UK for JS. The only issue I have is the fact that all of the lipsticks are constantly sold out so you have to keep and eye on his twitter and instagram for updates, he is on the ball with this and lets you know instantly.

If you love your liquid lipsticks to go on easily, pigmented and comfortably then these are definitely for you. If you want something that dries quickly and lasts all day/night, these are for you. If you want something that won’t break the bank and is an all-round fabulous product, these are 100% for you!

Favourite Male Bloggers

Hi guys, 

Well its my little sisters birthday today and a bunch of us went out last night to a country and western bar. Not my first choice, actually I don't even think it would have been my 2nd or 3rd choice but do you know what, it was a fantastic night and my sister had the time of her life which is all that matters. The club was packed and I honestly thought it was going to be filled with the older generation but it was rammed with mostly under 40's which was a shock. They had real life shoot outs, obviously the audience were protected and they had an amazing band on who didn't stick to the norm, they ventured outside of that and hit us up with some real classics that even I knew ha-ha. I can only imagine the headaches today though but as I was the designated driver, I didn't have any alcohol and my head has thanked me today. Yay for me ha-ha. 

Anyway, enough about me. This is a follow up to yesterdays, Favourite Bloggers, post which featured some fantastic ladies but as I love a lot of the equally fantastic male bloggers/vloggers out there, I thought it was only fair to have a stand alone post for them.

I don’t understand the big deal with men talking about or wearing makeup as it should be genderless. Its art essentially. If you want to wear makeup or have a pamper session or just apply some skincare products to help out with problematic skin then who the hell says you can’t! I see a lot of hate on twitter especially for the younger age group including the very talented James who is so incredible when it comes to not only makeup but important issues. I find it very sad that in this day and age it’s still seen as something to snigger at or heckle abuse at. It’s not on really! It isn't just makeup that I follow these bloggers for, I trust their judgement when it comes to buying gifts for the amazing men in my life as they open your eyes to whats out there that woman might not necessarily know. Its the same for men, if you dont know what to buy those ladies in your life then head over to a few blogs or listen to those not so subtle hints shes been dropping ha-ha.

I love all of these male bloggers simply because they are uber talented and know their stuff. If I am looking for a beauty related present for Liam including aftershaves, grooming products etc. then I head over to most of these guys to find out what’s good. A lot of them I watch simply because I personally take makeup tips from as they always look flawless. Honestly, I could watch Marc & Jeffree for hours and hours and still never perfect my makeup like they do. They are truly talented. But without further ado, here are my top male bloggers/vloggers.

Marc Sinclair 

A fellow Scot and an incredible makeup artist. I know a lot of folk just say they are a MUA but Marc really is and he is so talented. I had the pleasure of watching him work live when I attended a Lancôme event at House of Fraser last year and his skills were on point! Such a gentleman and his skills are out of this world.

Jake at The Beauty Boy

I have followed Jake since the beginning and he is honestly such a gorgeous man. He is the sweetest person ever and the work he has created is amazing. He is an advocate for #MakeupIsGenderless and is reaching the world with his voice which I find incredible. Keep an eye out for him as I’m sure he will be a household name one day.

Jeffree Star

People may find him a bit much but I love him! He is flat out honest, he works incredibly hard and he isn’t afraid of shouting his accomplishments from the rooftops. Plus, if you didn't already know, he is the creator of the best liquid lipsticks on the planet. Check them out here. However, they are always sold out so if you want to buy them, keep an eye on his IG or Twitter as he is great at keeping his followers updated.

Tom at Manface

I adore Tom’s honesty and detailed blogposts. He recently called out the male grooming industry after receiving an aftershave that was in the shape of a bullet. I loved every word of it as it was true. Obviously I don’t buy male products for myself other than the Nivea Post Shave Balm but this marketing ploy and the design of the packaging when there is so much suffering in the world due to guns, was a real eye opener. Also, if you love looking at excellent product photos, head over to his blog immediately! 

Cj at Desert Island Skin

Cj is a new follow for me as I recently found him on a recent #30PlusBlogs chat and completely agreed with his views on certain topics. This then lead me to his blog which is amazing. He doesn't just talk beauty, he covers a wide range of topics that will appeal to everyone.

Wayne Goss

I have followed for Wayne on YouTube for years and he is still one of my favourites. I have started to view his videos first when I go to my subscriptions as he is funny, charismatic, honest and talented. Wayne, is a real makeup artist ha-ha, not a fake one who just says he is. He actually trained and has worked in the industry for a long time so when he gives you tips on how to perfect something, you better listen. 

Peter Minkoff

I am sure you have read Peters guest post here on Beauty Talk with Lauren but I urge you to follow him on twitter as he guest posts on a lot of blogs and covers a wide range of topics. I trust his tips for dressing as he knows the upcoming trends and is always on point. A true fashion genius. 

Stephen at Beauty King UK

Love, Love, Love this blog! It covers so many topics and has helped me out when I have been stuck for presents numerous times. I swear, Stephen is such an enabler. I find myself buying products he raves about and stashing them away until a celebration comes round and then I start dishing them out like candy. A perfect example of an interesting blog that covers a wide range of topics.

That’s all I got today guys, I hope you check them out as they are so talented it makes me want to cry. I find myself heading over to their blogs/channels more and more as I really trust what they have to say when it comes to certain products. Truly talented gentlemen.

Favourite Female Bloggers

Hi guys,

I am going to do a male blogger post in the future but today I wanted to focus on my favourite girls as I have been following these girls since the start and it would be unfair to cut anyone out as I would be lying and this post would be top 20 which nobody has time for I’m afraid. Hence the split post.

As you can imagine, I follow a lot of blogs, maybe through Twitter, Instagram, Bloglovin or just good old Google bookmarks but I always go onto these blogs first as I know I will get honest reviews, some good chat and an all-round great experience. Each person here has something different but they are all equally great in my eyes. Part of being a blogger is showing love to other bloggers and helping people out. All it takes is a simple retweet on twitter, a like on facebook/Instagram or a comment on a blog to make a bloggers day so I thought I would go all out and tell you my favourites today.

1) Renata at Speaking Beauty UK

I have been blogging for about the same time as Renata and have followed her since I found her way back in 2014. I have to say it’s been a pleasure watching her blog grow. Her content is always fantastic but it’s her fabulous photography that grabs my interest now. Her pictures are simply stunning. She is also the loveliest person and if you have any questions or queries she always answers you which I find refreshing as so many people don’t bother nowadays which is sad.

2) Alina at Beauty with Charm

Another person I have been following since the start of my blogging life. Alina is the sweetest person ever who seems to know her stuff. She has great content that is both interesting and informative. Her photography is also on point. Not only does she run a blog I love but she also has a successful YouTube channel which is filled with some great makeup looks. Get over there immediately to copy her looks as they are fab.

3) Jemma at Dorkface

How do you even start talking about this girl? She is the cutest scouser I have had the pleasure of speaking to. She is the co-creator of #TheGirlGang which in itself is an achievement. It brings all girls together and really feels like a home on twitter, especially when its movie night and you feel like you’re having a sleepover with your best pals, except it’s virtual. Jemma is the kind of person who always has something nice to say. She truly is a blogger all about other bloggers. Her blog is filled with gorgeous pastel colours and bright beautiful pictures but she isn’t afraid to talk about more serious issues that affect her which is a reason I have followed her for the past couple of years. If you want to read someone’s blog who makes you feel like her friend, then I suggest you follow Jemma.

4) Tilly Cutler

I found Tillys YouTube channel a few months ago and I have been slowly working my way through her videos. Not only does she come across very friendly but she's also a bloody inspiration. Tilly started out doing Slimming World and has lost a staggering 5 stone by sticking to her plan. Don’t get me wrong, like all of us she has treats every now and again but I love how honest she is about it. If she has had a blow out, she will tell you, if she had a takeaway with her husband, she will tell you that too. She makes you feel normal for having a treat every now again. I truly love her personality and now that she is gonna be a mum, her videos on all things baby are worth watching too.

5) Caroline Hirons

I mean come on! I have been talking about this woman since day one as she is a bloody skincare God. She knows everything and has the best advice for all skin types. She is very ballsy so expect a straight forward response from her.

6) Anna at Vivianna Does Makeup

I have to include Anna here, she was the reason I took the chance on blogging as she made it seem so magical. Three years later, I’m not so sure ha-ha. I’m joking, I still love it. Her content is so strong, her blog has the crispest design and her photography is out of this world. I also adore her YouTube videos but her blog is still where it’s at for me.

7) Jasmine at Jasmine Talks Beauty

I love Jasmines blog, you don’t get to 44k on Bloglovin for no reason. Her reviews seem very genuine and her photos are gorgeous. Are we sensing a theme here? I do love a good photo ha-ha. Seriously though, I love almost every blog post Jasmine has created as they are all so informative. I don’t come away thinking, oh God should I try that, I come away thinking, I need that!

8) Kate from Kate La Vie

I don’t love her because she is a fellow Scot, well maybe a little ha-ha. No seriously, this girl knows what she is doing. Her Instagram was the first thing I found and then I had to follow (stalk) her on everything as she was just so fab. I love her style, photographs, writing and I also love the fact that she has a successful shop on Nouvelle Daily. It just goes to show you the impact bloggers have on others when they are able to make a business out of it.

9) The Sunday Girl

Another Scottish punter ha-ha. This girl knows the script, she is a complete professional and her blog is just the stuff of dreams. I love every aspect of her blog, obviously the photos are the biggest selling point for me as they are always so creative and clear but she is very clear on her thoughts and lays everything out so well that you never have to go hunting to find out if she actually liked the product or not. I hate when you come away confused but Sunday Girl is straight to the point. Everyone should be following her.

10) Georgina at She Might Be Loved

What’s not to like about this girl. She is a fantastic blogger who speaks her mind. I love her honesty and the way she stands up to important issues. She is a joy to watch and read. Her straight talking, no nonsense taking attitude is top notch. Follow her on snapchat too, she is hilarious.

That’s my top 10. I think there is a running theme of great photography going on here but it is one of the things that keeps me coming back and one of the main reasons I read and love each and every one of these blogs. I know there are no men here but as I said at the start, I will do another post as I have a few male bloggers that I love too.

Top 10 Lush Bath Products

Hi guys,

I thought I would give you a rundown of my favourite bath time products from Lush. This is only going to involve bath bombs, bubble bars etc. so don’t be expecting any shampoos, conditioners etc. I will put together another Lush post later in the year of other Lush favourites. A few may surprise you and I may be missing a lot of “cult favourites” but we all have our favourite scents don’t we. Here we go.

1) Frozen (£3.95)

I love this bath bomb. It is infused with grapefruit, neroli and rose oil and leaves your bath filled with silver glitter. I normally hate bath bombs like this as the glitter goes everywhere but this bath bomb is too pretty to fret about the small stuff. This is a great addition to a morning bath when you want to wake yourself up as the grapefruit oil is very uplifting and refreshing. I personally use this at night time as I wouldn’t want to go out with glitter all over me, and boy does this leave glitter on you ha-ha. My bathtub, bathroom, clothes, towel, hair (which I didn’t submerge), pyjamas and toothbrush were covered. I actually don’t know how I managed it ha-ha.

2) Dragons Egg (£3.50)

I don’t know if you know this but Bergamot is my favourite scent ever! I have numerous perfumes, bath products, candles and oils with this heavy scent so it’s no wonder that this made it into my top ten. As well as bergamot, it also has lemon oil and jasmine and as an added extra, some popping candy.

3) Blackberry (£3.35)

Another Bergamot favourite but this also has frankincense too which makes for a very relaxing bath. Both of these oils are used in aromatherapy to help release nervous tension and can be used for depression and anxiety. If I feel a bit stressed, I pop this into my bath and let it soak away my troubles. There is also a little surprise once the bomb fizzes out but I won’t ruin it for anyone who hasn’t used this before.

4) Fizzbanger (£3.50)

This is my number one bath bomb from Lush. I love that it looks so simple with its beautiful yellow glow yet once submerged in the water it’s a different kettle of fish all together. It really reminds me of Christmas, I think it’s because of the apple and cinnamon scent that wafts out of it but it also has Ylang Ylang and popping candy to give it a little edge.

5) Rose Jam (£3.75)

This is my favourite bubble bar/bubbleroon that Lush has to offer. The scent is so strong that a tiny crumble from this bad boy will leave a lingering scent in your bathroom for days. It gives off the most beautiful pink tone in the water and leaves your skin so soft afterwards. I love the double dose of rose that it has to offer too so you can only imagine how pungent it is.

6) Mmmelting Marshmallow Moment (£2)

Holy Moly, this is so beautiful. For such a small amount of product, this really packs a punch in the old fragrance department. I just pop this into a freshly run bath and leave to dissolve. The name suits this bath oil as it is super sweet, almost like candy floss. It contains Almond oil, extra virgin coconut oil and marshmallow powder which help to sooth and hydrate your body.

7) Dreamtime (£2)

If you want a product to relax you and send you off to the deepest of sleeps, then this bath oil is for you. This contains Chamomile, Lavender and Shea Butter which will help to sooth, moisturise and calm you before you hit the sack for some much needed z`s.

8) Blue Skies and Fluffy White Clouds (£4.95)

I adore this bubble bar and I can normally get about 4 baths from it. I don’t like to use a lot so bubble bars last me ages, but trust me, you don’t need a lot when it comes to this one. It contains patchouli which is used as a relaxant as well as frankincense and cinnamon leaf oil which help to calm.

9) Tisty Tosty (£3.50)

This bath bomb has a special place in my heart as it was one of the first products I ever tried. It’s quite small but boy does it pack a punch. Apparently it’s based on a medieval love potion, I’m yet to try that theory out as I just love popping it in my bath, allowing the real rosebuds to disperse in the water and for my bathroom to become a floral scented dream. It contains Rose oil which is supposed to sooth broken hearts, I mean how sweet is that? Again, not tested that out but hey, every little helps when it comes to a broken heart so why not. It also contains Jasmine and Lemon. An all-time favourite.

10) Yuzu and Cocoa Shower Cream (from £4.95)

I love this shower cream, it’s pretty thick, so you don’t need a lot of it, but oh does it smell good. Again, it contains Bergamot oil which we all know by now is very uplifting and also good at easing tension. The cream also contains Tonka and Cocoa absolute which help to make this gel smell like, in my opinion, chocolate oranges. As well as all that, it has uplifting grapefruit oil and cocoa butter.
